Reflection

Experience :

My experience throughout these 14 weeks have been interesting, eye-opening, and has reshaped how I see language and design. From the start, it taught me how to be more expressive, not by using words but the design of words through manipulation, composition, interpretation, as well as universal design styles, something I've never thought about, and taught me how to use Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. The build-up of assignments for me was a very interesting way to progress in the term, with the start helping build my typographical knowledge and was the beginning for utilising softwares to create something new. For the second it has helped me express myself more creatively when it comes to contextual designs, where I also learned crucial rules in type design and formatting. Lastly, the final task was probably the best way to end typography, where it showed me the trials of making a whole new font, and the challenges and tiny details that go into it. Overall, my experience is one that I probably can't forget, it was definitely a challenging subject, but it was also fun to get to be able to experience, despite all the errors made during designing, and I'm interested to take Advanced typography in the future.

Observations :

From my observations, typography is something everyone can learn, but it is really hard to be able to get good at it, especially in the design aspects, where trying to be unique or creative comes hard - atleast for me - and you'd really have to work hard and take a lot of time to come up with something no one has thought of and then make it real through your design skill and knowledge. Another thing I have observed is that it is more common than I thought, where people come up with almost identical ideas initially, pushing my point further where we have to work hard and take a lot of time to come up with something greater. Something else I'm able to observe now are the tiny details in typography. Before, I would just focus on the text composition wholly, and see it as something unimportant and that it's just text, however after this module I realised and have started to notice the minor details that would make up a visual, and how it can be improved if there was a minor error, etc.

Findings :

I have found that after this module, my technical skills for the softwares have changed immensely, and for any other task that should require the use of the softwares, I'll be glad I took typography because I know how to use it. Moreover, I’ve come to realise that typography isn’t just about making text look good, and it's a form of communication by visuals. Even small changes, like adjusting the kerning or changing the weight of a font, can completely change the clarity of what you're trying to say, which very much affects the reader / audience. I have also found that I am decent at developing my work, and creating a design that visually attracts myself, I can't speak for others, but I hope thats what it is too, however I am not a very technical person, and when it comes to making a font with all the kerning, adjustment of axises, anything to do with precise detail, I find it very difficult and tedious, which is something I ultimately have to work on to produce good and precise work.
