Introduction to Basic Composition :

- Focal point : helps your viewers' eyes naturally settle on the important part of the design.
- Scale & Hierarchy : Scale is often used to communicate hierarchy
            - By drawing attention toward and away from certain elements.
- Balance of elements : Think of each element having 'weight' to apply balance.
            - Small elements might have less weight compared to large elements / heavily-textured elements will weigh more than flat elements.
- White Space : Balances the main focus of the composition.
            - Can help boost your design clarity; by balancing out the more complicated parts of the design with empty space.

- Rule of Thirds : Process of dividing an image by thirds, using grids (two horizontal / vertical lines).
            - Grid holds 9 spaces
            - Position the most important parts of the design on the intersections of the grid.

Rule of Thirds is a way to :
  • Use composition techniques that are in line with what’s naturally pleasing to the eye.

  • Creatively use negative space.

  • Create conversation between the subject and background.

- The Golden Ratio : A mathematical ratio that is based on the Fibonacci sequence and is commonly found in nature.
            - Fosters an organic and naturally-pleasing look
            - Creates a sense of beauty through harmony & proportion
            - Useful guideline for determining the layout of the design
            - Utilises the ratio 1:1.618

- Composition [Framing & Cropping] (In Film) :
  • - Single shot frame
    • - F.t 1 character alone; primary focus
    • - Clean single : no other character present in the frame
    • - Dirty single : hint of another person present, but single person still remains the focus.
  • - Two shot - Two characters visible in frame
    • - Displays visual relationship between 2 people present
  • - Over the shoulder : Most commonly used to showcase a conversation
  • - Point of view : Experience in the characters' shoes.
  • - Insert : Showcases important / detailed information

In this week's class we started on the work Collage elements layering & composition, where we had to compose 3 designs using the same or different elements from magazine cut-outs / other materials. This would introduce us to layering components to create a design.
