Task 3

In this exercise, we had to group up with one other person to create a short-story video, inclusive of one video special-effect. We began by deciding what effect to do and revolve our story around that.

Process

Week 10 :
This was the start of out project, where my group member and I decided on a video effect and a story to tell with it. The video effect we chose was one of going through a wall, and clothes will be left behind.

Once we decided on the vfx, we discussed about the story. We first had the idea to be chased and the person would escape through the wall, and with the tone of the story being quite dark and suspenseful. However with more discussion we landed on an adventurous and funny story of hide and seek, where the player escapes through the wall.

Week 12 :
After deciding on a theme for our story, we began planing out our scenes and shots to carry out the production process later on. Figures below are the planning / documentation of shot list and storyboarding.

Week 13 :
Once we planned our scenes and how we want to execute them, we began the production stage and started filming. We planned to film at my house as we had a vision for our scenes and a spot that was available for us to do it was at my place.

Equipment : Tulip's camera, tripod, phone (mic)

- Footage of Tripod
Week 14 :
After the holidays we got to editing, where we split up the work so I would compile the scenes and edit the sounds / audio, whereas Tulip would do the special effects editing.

Inclusive of my part was organising the shots to create the video in order, to align the audios we had / voice overs we did, add sound effects and ambience to the video. While editing and after receiving Tulip's part I also colour corrected a scene to make it cohesive.

Behind The Scenes
In regards to behind-the-scenes shots, we only focused on taking the shots and not documenting them separately, and so we only have a compilation of bloopers and shots we hadn't used in our video, compiled in this google drive folder.

Final Outcome

Reflection

Experience :

Creating the 1-minute video was an enjoyable and engaging experience, especially working together with my groupmate. Acting out the hide-and-seek concept allowed us to be creative and experiment with storytelling. Filming the scenes and planning the climax where the character jumps through a wall and vanishes was fun and exciting, as it pushed us to think visually and creatively while applying video effects. However there were some challenges and we had to adapt, such as losing footage due to not pressing the record button, so we had to change the scene to suit our circumstances.

Observation :

Throughout the filming process, we noticed several challenges, particularly in achieving precision during shooting. We did not initially realise the importance of being consistent and considerate of positioning, lighting, and timing when filming consecutive scenes. Small changes in camera angle, actor placement, and lighting conditions made it difficult to create a smooth transition for the video effect, especially for the vanishing scene.

Findings :

From this experience, we learned that careful planning and technical awareness are crucial when producing videos that involve visual effects. Proper positioning, stable lighting, and accurate timing are essential to ensure continuity and realism in edited scenes. Overall, this project helped us understand the importance of preparation and attention to detail in video production, while also reinforcing the value of teamwork and communication.
