Project 1

In this project, we were tasked with dubbing a clip of the movie 'Everything Everywhere All At Once', where we had to voice over the dialogue and provide sound effects and ambience. We started with creating an excel sheet outlining the parts of the clip and includes details regarding the dubbing part.

Excel Sheet :

Process

- We began this project in class by going around campus to find audios for sound effects, and to discuss in a group where to find external sources for sound effects, and I manage to come up with a few I have used throughout the video;

- Secondly, I began compiling the rest of the sound effects and positioned them in the timeline, while also recording the dialogues myself and adding them accordingly.

- As per instructions / advice in the slides, we are advised to split up our tracks into: 3 for dialogue, 4 for sound effects, and 3 for ambience; can be altered.

- Tracks 1 - 3 = Dialogue; 1. Alpha Waymond, 2. Evelyn, 3. IRS employee
- Tracks 4 - 7 = Sound effects; hard and soft sound effects
- Tracks 8 - 11 = Ambience sounds

Editing Audio

- After gathering audio, we had to edit our voices to suit the characters, and adjust the pitch and volume. As I am a girl, I mainly focused on altering Waymond's voice completely to sound more like a male, and used the pitch shifter we learned in class;

Final Outcome

Feedback

Week 3 (9/10/25)

General Feedback : Start working on finding websites that provide sound effects, and record your own using your phone, and bring recordings for next week's class.

Week 4 (16/10/25)

General Feedback : Continue recording audios and collecting sound effects, as well as edit dialogue audios to match the characters by adjusting the pitch.

Reflection

Experience :

This was a good way to be introduced to the module, where dubbing a video clip showed me a lot about what goes into the process of editing sounds in filmmaking, as well as helped me familiarise myself with Premiere Pro. It was fun to make and align audio recordings almost exactly to how you would imagine it'd sound in real time, and finding audios that matched the material / setting, etc. That was my favourite part, finding, recording, and matching audios to objects and scenes in the video; however my least favourite part was adjusting the pitch and volumes of the audio as it was just a bit tedious.

Observations :

From this task, I have observed that there are many components that go into dubbing a clip, let alone a whole movie, where I have tried and took many takes of recordings to get the perfect sound to match with the video clip. Premiere Pro is an extensive software and I have found a lot of tools helpful in the making of this task, and using it has helped make the process go smoother.

Findings :

Through this task, I have found more about dubbing and sounds in filmmaking and recording, and it has made me look at things like films and voice acting differently. I used to think voice acting would be easy, but it is essentially just acting; which is not easy as I found out the hard way. I have also found that ambience is quite important and essential to set the tone and scene, as previously I thought my clip would be fine without it, but when I tried and added some background noise, it altered the whole feel of the scene and created more depth and realness too it.  I think Video and Sound Production is really interesting and I am excited to make discover more about filmmaking / editing and potentially creating my own video later on.
