Task 1 | Character Design
In the beginning of this module, we were tasked with creating character designs and completing exercises to help our process.
Exercises :
Creating Line Art
For the first exercise, we practice creating line art and coloured details on characters generated by AI. We did the ghost character, among the other given characters.
Task Process :
Creating Character Designs
After the exercises during week 2 and 3, we started thinking about character designs. We had to design 3 characters; they can be about anything, and for submission we would have to create sketches, a design rationale, and a moodboard.
Character #1 -
Fairy
Original Moodboard -
For this character, I wanted to create a soft character that wanders the forest and is friendly with everyone / thing in its path. I took inspiration from small characters like thumbelina, flowers, and bugs for the design - to retain a passive and cute vibe.
Preliminary Sketches -
These ideas were based on the moodboard, as well as a chibi style (having a larger head compared to body) to create a cute design.

- Created a very round design (body shape / features) to emphasise-on and create a friendly and open effect.
- Psychologically, circular shapes represent wholeness, unity, community, and often project feelings of openness and
comfort. (Iron Dragon, n.d.)
From there, I liked this sketch and continued to develop it to create the base for my final line art.
After receiving feedback from my teacher, he advised that I lengthen her legs and add shoes to her design.
Using the knowledge gained from the first exercise (ghost line art / colouring), I began to create the proper line art using Adobe Illustrator, as well as colour.
